Current status of online gaming and some factors related to online gaming disorder in students of Tam Nong High School - Phu Tho in 2025

Abstract

Objective: To determine the rate of online gaming and some factors related to online gaming disorder in students of Tam Nong High School, Phu Tho province in 2025. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 260 students of Tam Nong High School, Phu Tho Province. A self-administered questionnaire was used to survey personal, family, academic, social, and online gaming characteristics. Online gaming disorder was assessed using the VN-IGD-17 scale. Results: The rate of online gaming among students at Tam Nong High School was 89.23%, of which 16.38% of students playing online games had screening scores showing a risk of online gaming disorder, according to the VN-IGD-17 scale. The study identified factors related to students' IGD including: game genre (OR = 2.39; 95% CI: 1.18 - 4.87; p < 0.05), device (p < 0.05), skipping school to play games (OR = 3.97; 95% CI: 1.64 - 9.63; p < 0.05), no time limit for playing games (OR = 5.67; 95% CI: 2.31 - 13.94; p < 0.001), number of hours playing in a week (OR = 4.45; 95% CI: 1.14 - 17.41; p < 0.05). Conclusion: The rate of online gaming among students at Tam Nong High School is 89.23%. 16.38% of students who play online games have a screening score indicating a risk of online gaming disorder, according to the VN-IGD-17 scale. There is a statistically significant relationship between game genre, device, taking time off school to play games, no time limit for playing games, number of hours played per week with IGD.
