ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF GIONG NOI (BEN TRE PROVINCE) IN THE CONTEXT OF ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PREHISTORIC AND PROTOHISTORIC SOUTHERN REGION OF VIETNAM

Abstract

The Giồng Nổi archaeological site is located in Bến Tre province which may belong to two phases including the prehistory and protohistory periods. This site remains many importance evidences which contribute to the study of the historical development of the Southern region of Vietnam this time as well.

Based on the comparison of the size, shape and materials of artifacts, manufacturing techniques used to make decorative patterns on these artifacts and on the wavy-rimmed pottery samples that found in the Giồng Nổi site, this article proposes two temporary chronological frameworks for this site, in which the prehistorical stage possibly begun from the 3000-3500 BP, and, it probably ended around the 3rd -2nd  century BC as well as explores the interactions between Giồng Nổi site and other sites in the Vàm Cỏ river basin, as well as other areas in the Southeastern region.
