CAUSES OF DISEASE AMONGST PRISONERS AT CON DAO PRISON DURING 1946 - 1954
Abstract
Con Dao Prison was one of the first and largest prisons in the South that the French conlonialists built to detain those who were considered opposers, threatening the security. This prison was built in 1862, right after the French established colonization of three provinces of South Vietnam. Con Dao prison is called a "hell on earth" because of its harsh imprisonment, hard labor regime and brutal forms of disciplining, torturing and beating prisoners, causing the illness of thousands of prisoners. In this article, the author analyzes the situation of prisoners' illness in the period of 1946 - 1954 to provide an additional "hell" aspect of Con Dao prison.
