RELATIONS BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF VIỆT NAM AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE PARIS PEACE NEGOTIATIONS (1968 - 1973)
Abstract
In early 1969, the Republic of Vietnam formally participated in Paris Conference on Vietnam with the United States, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. In the negotiating process at the Paris Conference (1969-1973), the United States focused on Hanoi’s negotiations to reach its interests while the Republic of Vietnam became a seemingly abandoned ally. It means that the South Vietnam government was just a “puppet government” with “no real voice” on the negotiating table. In the conference, the United States - South Vietnam government relation had tensions and suspicion that made the alliance relationship more and more severely cracked. In the context of Paris Conference (1969-1973), the paper will focus on the Republic of Vietnam - United States relation with its conflicts and disagreements due to differences in these national interests.
