THE ACCEPTANCE AND THE MAKING USE OF WESTERN MILITARY TECHNIQUES BY NGUYEN DYNASTY (1802-1858)

Abstract

The Nguyen Dynasty was founded when Western Capitalist countries were attempting to involve and increase its influence in Eastern countries, including Vietnam. Under this circumstance, the Nguyen Dynasty took the initiative to accept that influence, especially to adopt military technology. Although in the first half of the 19^th century the Nguyen Dynasty gained some achievements when embracing knowledge and adopting Western military technology which enhanced the military power of its imperial army, however, they still could not afford to defend the country against foreign invaders, especially the Western countries.
