AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS AND LIVELIHOODS ADAPTATION IN SOME ETHNIC GROUPS ON THE VIETNAM-CHINA BORDER TODAY (Study in Ban Lau Commune, Muong Khuong District, Lao Cai Province)

Exporting bananas and pineapples to China through unofficial quota has brought opportunities for poverty reduction and quick enrichment for people in Ban Lau commune, Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province. In conjunction with the construction of border barrier with Vietnam, China began implementing stricter quarantine, testing, and inspection procedures for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable imports in 2019. For the ethnic groups of Ban Lau commune, quality, traceability, and strategies to increase the area of fruit trees and promote domestic consumption have created many difficulties for their farming activities. In addition to clarifying the governments’ and locals’ responses to the aforementioned context, this article outlines some notable issues in the strategy to transform the livelihoods of people in border area in the next time.
