Abstract

The architecture of Mound 5 at the Cat Tien relic site in Lam Dong features a unique square cylindrical shape, which is uncommon in the Mekong Delta region. Previously, there were various hypotheses on the nature of Mound 5. Some suggested that it may be a temple-tomb or a tomb-tower. Others proposed that it might be an altar associated with a tower. Additionally, there was a theory suggesting that the architectural design of Mound 5 resembled that of a temple dedicated to the deity Siva during the transitional phase... Mound 5's architectural ruins were re-exposed during the 2020-2021 excavation effort at the Cat Tien relic site (Lam Dong). Based on the style of architecture and examination of associated relics uncovered, we believe the original design of Go 5 architecture was a Buddhist stupa that was eventually turned into a monument worshiping Siva.
