This study applies gender approach to analyze the participation of gender in decision-making in rice irrigation practices to address water scarcity in rice cultivation in the Mekong Delta, specifically in Cần Thơ. The survey results conducted with 312 households using stratified sampling methods reveal that women’s involvement in irrigation-related decisions remains relatively constrained. Although the level of competition for water resources in rice production is not currently high, it is essential to develop a proper water usage plan. The analysis indicates that households with land areas exceeding 3.5 hectares experience greater water scarcity during the dry season and must tackle water scarcity more frequently compared to the remaining group. Therefore, relevant support policies are required to effectively tackle the issue of water scarcity, as well as enhancing active engagement of gender in the course of households’ irrigation decision-making.
