Abstract
Bilateral merchandise trade between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany has developed strongly over the past decade, especially after the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) officially took effect in August 2020. However, the contexts of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts and global inflation have brought challenges to their merchandise trade. The purpose of this study is to analyze, compare and evaluate the situation of trade in goods between the two countries over the past time. The results show that: (1) Import and export of goods between the two countries have been growing, but not stable and tend to decrease; (2) Import and export of goods between them account only for a small proportion of each country's total merchandise trade; (3) Vietnam mainly exports to Germany raw, semi-processed, low-value products, while Germany exports to Vietnam mainly high-tech products.
