The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of soil types in Dong Thap province (prior to the administrative merger). The study employed several methods including investigation, field surveys, sampling, sample analysis, statistics, comparison, evaluation, and data processing. According to the Vietnam Soil Classification System, a total of 255,155.78 hectares of agricultural land in Dong Thap province were identified to comprise 8 main soil groups, 16 soil types, and 34 soil sub-types. Among these, the fluvisols group covers the largest area with 141,624.04 hectares, followed by thionic fluvisols group (74,253.02 hectares), acrisols group (15,848.51 hectares), anthrosols group (15,439.24 hectares), gleysols group (5,065.70 hectares), plinthosols group (2,299.66 hectares), histosols group (463.85 hectares) and arenosols group (161.76 hectares). The physical and chemical properties of each soil group and soil type are closely tied to soil formation substances. The research results contribute to providing a land database to support agricultural restructuring in Dong Thap province.
