Quality control standards for stem cell culture and stem cell banking

Establishing quality control standards in stem cell culture facilities and stem cell banks plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, efficacy, and clinical applicability of stem cell-based therapies. This regulatory framework requires strict criteria, including cell origin, biological characteristics, purity, viability, differentiation potential, genomic stability, periodic quality assessments, and complete documentation for traceability. Stem cell culture facilities and stem cell banks must comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Tissue Practice (GTP) to minimise contamination risks and maintain optimal culture conditions. Additionally, biomedical ethics, donor screening procedures, and compliance with international regulatory standards (FDA, EMA) are essential for guaranteeing the quality of stem cell products. This article presents detailed quality control standards for stem cell culture and banking. Particular emphasis is placed on basic standards concerning facilities, cell authentication, cell counting and viability assessment, and microbiological safety evaluation.
