Abstract

Slender vertical structures such as tall buildings, antenna masts, and towers are very sensitive to wind actions that give rise to large dynamic response. Due to the complex nature of wind turbulence, it is complicated to model analytically the wind-induced responses of slender structures. Current wind codes provide different models to evaluate dynamic responses but are limited to basic assumptions. This paper presents a general formulation to evaluate the buffeting displacement of slender vertical structures in the along-wind direction, considering the effects of different turbulent components. An application for a real structure will illustrate the theory and point out the limitation of conventional approaches.
