Abstract

Construction materials production is a significant consumer of energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in economic sectors in Vietnam, of which the largest contribution is cement production. The study aims to evaluate the current status of GHG emissions of the construction materials industry through fuel consumption demand and emission coefficients. Fuel consumption demand is estimated based on Vietnam's inter-sectoral balance sheet in 2007, 2012 and 2018. In addition, the emission coefficient of CO2 depends on the type of fuel used and is estimated according to the source of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Results show that CO2 emissions in the construction materials sector had tend to increase in the period 2007-2018, CO2 emissions in 2012 increased 4 times and in 2018 increased 11.7 times compared to 2007. Based on the assessment of the current situation, the study will propose a framework for reducing GHG emissions for the construction materials sector and 6 technical solutions to effectively reduce emissions for the cement production sector in the coming time.
