Characteristics of communication in cyberspace from the perspective of linguistics

Abstract

With the rapid development of digital technologies and wireless networks, cyberspace has emerged as a crucial environment for human social interaction. Communication in cyberspace exhibits both the universal features of traditional communication and distinctive characteristics shaped by the virtual context, digital identity, and online platforms. This paper explores the linguistic aspects of digital communication, focusing on specific features such as the formation of digital identities, the phenomenon of virtual linguistic landscapes, and the evolution of digital language. Furthermore, it analyzes the factors influencing communication on online platforms, including immediacy, simultaneity, hybridity, spontaneity, distancing, and publicity. Based on a linguistic communication framework, the study highlights how cyberspace reshapes human interaction and language use, thereby impacting cultural, educational, and social dynamics. The research also calls for a standardized digital language model to ensure effective, ethical, and culturally appropriate communication in the digital age.
