The conversion of word classes in Vietnamese

Abstract

Although the conversion of word classes in Vietnamese has been addressed in traditional grammar, this study provides new findings from a comprehensive perspective of modern grammar, encompassing syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects. This process involves not only the conversion of lexical categories within content words or from content words to function words as a result of grammaticalization, but also the conversion of function words through the process of modalization.
