Initial sequences of business transactions in Vietnam and France

Abstract

Initial sequences always play an important role in communication because they enable interlocutors to manage their dialogues. We recorded business transactions in shops in Vietnam and France. We attempted to find out Whether or not initial sequences appear systematically?; What components these sequences consist of? And whether or not there are differences between Vietnamese and French initial sequences ? The findings highlight that there are differences in the organization of initial sequences. They can create misunderstandings or cultural shocks in intercultural communication.
