Abstract

Abstract: The use of force in law-enforcement operations within overlapping
maritime zones is a contested question in international law. This article examines the
most recent rules and case law governing the use of force at sea in general, and
analyses the rights and obligations of States in overlapping maritime areas. From this, it
delineates the limits applicable to the use of force in maritime law-enforcement within
overlapping zones.
