AN APPLICATION OF THE TASK-BASED APPROACH IN TEACHING ENGLISH GRAMMAR FOR 8th GRADE AT PHUC DIEN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN HANOI

This study investigates the application of task-based language (TBL) teaching and learning to teach grammar to 8th graders at Phuc Dien Secondary School. This study was conducted to determine how teachers at Phuc Dien Secondary School utilized TBL in their classes. It also tries to discover the attitudes of students towards applying TBL in teaching grammar and the effectiveness of using TBL to teach grammar compared with traditional methods. The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative methods to carry out this research. With the help of 60 students and 6 teachers as participants, questionnaires and interviews were conducted. The present study shows that this approach can be suitable for high school contexts, but it may cause many difficulties for both learners and teachers. It can be concluded that teaching grammar through TBL gives learners many advantages. The students' positive attitudes towards this approach to teaching grammar encourage teachers to try to apply this approach in their classrooms. However, it is up to the teacher to decide whether they would prefer to adapt the grammar in the textbook to teach it through TBL or not. Factors to be considered in applying the task-based approach (TBA) to teaching grammar include students’ proficiency in English and the nature of the target grammatical item to be taught according to the syllabus.
