Abstract

This study aims to investigate and evaluate the impact of classroom debate on students' critical thinking and speaking abilities of second - year English majored students at Hanoi Metropolitan University; with beneficial outcomes and difficulties in the debate process. In order to achieve this objective, a survey opened with closed ended questions for 24 students majoring in English language at Hanoi Metropolitan University, along with the teacher's provision. The findings indicate the positive effects and difficulties in the debate process that students often face. Based on this survey, to advance some approaches to help students be more confident when they debate in front of a crowd and have more flexible language when encountering unexpected situations.
