STRUCTURE AND DISCOURSE FUNCTION OF THEME OF PSEUDO-CLEFT CONSTRUCTIONS IN VIETNAMESE CLAUSES

It was explained that, in Vietnamese clauses, word order is first and foremost determined by syntactic function. It was noted that, when word order variation takes place, other levels of sentence meaning, but not the semantic and grammatical role structures, are substantially affected. Theme is a naturally salient area that is generally used for a wide range of “urgent tasks” which frofile this category as simultaneously a marker of subjectivity or subjectivification and as a marker of discourse structure. It was shown that the used of different classes and type of Themes underscores their affinities with specific text type and speaker’s attitudes. This article is concerned with Theme of sentences classified by purpose in Vietnamse clauses, base on System Functional Grammar (SFG) of Halliday.
