Images of spring and soldiers in the spring songs by composer Xuan Hong

Abstract

Xuân Hồng (1928-1996) is known as a famous composer of spring songs in various historical periods. “Spring in the battlefield” was composed in 1963, “Spring Returns to Ho Chi Minh City” in 1975, and “Spring by the Window” in 1985. This article aims to analyze the artistic values of the lyrics and melodies of the songs to honor the author’s outstanding contributions for his professional and unique music composing activities. It emphasizes the techniques of selecting melodies and rhythms as well as constructing the images of spring and soldiers with subtlety, authenticity, and purity, closely associated with different historical moments of the country, with cheerful and lingering spring melodies. That's why his songs easily resonate with people and endure the test of time.
