POLITICAL AND SOCIAL DISCOURSES IN COCHINCHINESE FICTION FROM 1945 TO 1954

Abstract

The complicated term ‘discourse’ can be understood differently in various contexts and disciplines. Based on Foucault’s theory of discourse, this article analyzes language in literary works as causes and effects from political-social powers of the society in which related discourses are formed and used. From 1945 to 1954, many writers in Cochinchina were affected by the discourses of patriotic fighting, social renovation, and ethics, and simultaneously helped to popularize and strengthen those discourses in their writings.
