Abstract

After the period of rapid growth, Japanese modern society is now facing critical issues such as ageing population, urban development, creative economy and
sustainable development. Nurturing “zest for living” through arts education has been proven an effective effort in solving such issues. Based on an initial literature review by Japanese scholars, the article provides an overview of the crucial process in the Japanese policy-making and theoretical study on nurturing “zest for living”, as well as successful practices of arts and music education in the first decade of the 21th century. Through the Japanese case study, the article highlights an important research gap, both theoretical and practical, for the development of Vietnamese society.
