Abstract

In the last three decades of the 20th century, following the end of the American War in Vietnam, the POW/MIA (Prisoner of War/Missing in Action) issue evolved from a complex and contentious problem into a critical factor that propelled the normalization process of relations between the two nations. This article analyzes the origins of the issue, the perspectives of both sides, and the cooperative phases to solve the POW/MIA issue from initial engagement to the eventual agreement and the full normalization of VietnamU.S. relations in 1995. Furthermore, it underscores the efforts of both countries, the role of key individuals, and the importance of building mutual trust to move beyond the past and look toward the future.
