Birth practice of Thái people in the West of the two provinces of Thanh Hóa and Nghệ An

Abstract

The ethnic group of Thái in Vietnam consists of 2 branches: Black Thái (Tay Dam) and White Thái (Tay Đón or Tay Khao), but in the West of Thanh Hóa-Nghệ An, they are named after the local sub-group as Tày Thanh, Tày Đèng, Tày Mường… As for the Thái groups, each childbirth is not only the expression of the couple’s happiness, the great event of each family, but also the cheerfulness of the whole relatives. This article clarifies the birth practice along with the cultural specific denoting the local identity of the Thái people here.
