Abstract

Benedictus de Spinoza (1632-1677), a famous Dutch scientist and philosopher of the 17th century, was one of the foremost exponents of the 18th century Enlightenment philosophy. His scientific and philosophical achievements have a strong, extensive and long-lasting influence on modern and contemporary science and philosophy. When it comes to Western modernist rationalism, one immediately thinks of Spinoza. The article clarifies some basic contents of his rational philosophical thought, thereby initially evaluates the scientific values as well as certain limitations thereof to early modern Western philosophy.
