Abstract

International and Vietnamese studies on young people’s perceptions of marriage and family indicate that the meaning of marriage has altered in line with the social development and change. Studies in developed countries, including the US, have shown that the “laxness” in marriage institution leading to divorce or cohabitation has changed the youth’s perception and awareness about its meaning. Cultural and religious factors also have a major impact on this. While South Korea, Japan, Taiwan or India have achieved high economic growth regardless of their late industrialization compared to Western countries, their youth’s perception of divorce or cohabitation is pessimistic. Last but not least, gender differences significantly affect young people’s perceptions of marriage and family.
