Polyarchal Democracy and its Core Elements in Modern Societies

Polyarchal democracy is a model of social organization proposed by the political theory of capitalism, which aims to deal with the tyranny of the majority in modern democratic societies. The article clarifies the following contents: 1) premises of the formation of polyarchy; 2) core elements; 3) impacting factors, and 4) some relevant problems. Accordingly, polyarchy is characterized by a structure of several power centers coexisting with the state under the particular principles and political institutions. Its success depends on the actual function of the institutions and certain conditions. Polyarchy also embraces unresolved problems related to the power competition and influence among groups and organizations in the society.
