Application of GIS and Multi-Criteria Assessment (MCA) to assessment of the adaptation of crops (rice and other types of crops) in Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province

Abstract

Assessment of the land adaptation is a process of predicting land potential that is suitable for a given use purpose. The purpose of this paper is presentation of applying GIS and Multi-Criteria Assessment (MCA) to identify the adaption of land areas for rice and crops in Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province. In the study, 06 indicators were selected, including land categories, thickness of land layer, slope, height, watering ability and average annual rainfall to build an adaptive map for rice - crops. The obtained results show that, in Gio Linh district, the land areas suitable for growing rice - crops include 6% of land located in Gio Quang, Gio Chau, Gio My communes and Gio Linh, Trung Hai, Gio Mai tows, and 11% of land located in Trung Son, Gio Thanh, Gio Hoa, Gio An, Linh Hai and Gio Son communes; 48% of land areas are poorly adapted and 35% are not suitable for growing rice - crops. The results from the study can be used for regional planning regarded to rice - crop production to ensure food security and to cope with climate change.
