Abstract

Based on the study of process in which people in two villages of Gie Thuong and Gie Ha (Phu Yen commune, Phu Xuyen district, Ha Noi) adopted the profession of making leather shoes at the beginning twentieth century, the article discusses the selection of supplemental occupation of villages in the hollow area of Northern Delta of Vietnam. To escape from indigent life caused by the specific environment of hollow area and feudal socio-economic structure as well as to create an economic breakthrough, the hollowed-out villagers had gone to urban areas to earn living thereby they had found a number of new occupations which had brought contribution to improve some traditional ones bringing high income, to form businessmen, traders who had made good business and had became the national bourgeoisies.
