Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status of patients before and after surgery based on Body Mass Index (BMI) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) methods, surveying the patient's feeding 5 days after surgery at the General Surgery Department of Can Tho City General Hospital in 2022. A cross-sectional study was implemented among 105 patients in the General Surgery Department – Can Tho Hospital from January to June 2022 to identify the nutritional status of patients. The results showed that according to BMI, the rate of malnutrition at hospital admission was 29,5%, SGA 40%, Albumin (<35g/L) 29,5%, Protein (<60 g/L) 15,2%, RBC 21,9% and Hemoglobin 63,8% before surgery. After surgery, the prevalence of malnutrition by BMI was 35,2%, the prevalence of malnutrition by SGA increased to 80%. On the first day after surgery, total energy reached the lowest value of 920,79 ± 295,38 Kcal, and on the 5th day, the highest average energy was 1293,81 ± 482.05 Kcal. This energy value is lower than recommended. Research showed that there is a need to increase nutrition counseling before surgery so that patients understand the importance of nutrition with surgical fecal disease to prevent complications caused by malnutrition.
