Abstract

Khmu is the ethnic minority with the largest population and the highest rates of near-poor and poor households in Ky Son district. Previously, this ethnic group’s livelihood was primarily based on farming and animal husbandry; the low income was insufficient to ensure a stable and prosperous life. Since around 2018, with the development and integration of the country, livelihood opportunities have expanded. Many Khmu people in Ky Son district have migrated to work far away, both within and outside the country, which has helped improve their lives. However, alongside these positive aspects, working far away also has some negative impacts. This article examines the current situation of working away from home, the issues arising, and proposes some recommendations to increase the effectiveness of this activity for the Khmu people in Ky Son district, Nghe An province, in the future.
