Study on dynamic shear properties of Bituclair ES asphalt binder used in hot mix asphalt for road pavement surfaces

Abstract
Conventional asphalt pavements are black in color and exhibit low solar reflectance, resulting in high heat absorption and storage capacity, which increases surface temperature and contributes to the urban heat island effect. Therefore, the research and development of light-colored pavement materials with enhanced solar reflectivity are necessary. Bituclair ES is a semi-transparent synthetic binder, free of asphaltenes and modified with polymer additives, possessing optical properties that improve pavement reflectance. Since the dynamic shear rheological behavior of asphalt binders is characterized by the complex shear modulus (|G*|) and phase angle (δ), parameters associated with cracking and fatigue resistance, this study focuses on analyzing the rheological characteristics of Bituclair ES using Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) test to clarify its mechanical response under dynamic loading. The experiments were conducted using a SmartPave 92 device (Anton Paar, Austria) over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures to construct master curves of |G*| and δ, with specific evaluation at a frequency of 10 Hz. The results indicate that Bituclair ES meets the PG 76 performance grade. Master curve analysis shows that Bituclair ES exhibits higher |G*| than conventional 60/70 penetration grade asphalt at high-temperature/low-frequency conditions, but lower |G*| at low-temperature/high-frequency conditions, suggesting potential improvement in rutting resistance and cracking resistance in asphalt mixtures incorporating Bituclair ESDownloads
