Abstract

The image of the “Ninja Lead” ‑ Vietnamese women riding Honda Lead scooters while fully covered to protect
against sun and pollution has become a familiar cultural phenomenon. While often mocked, this behavior
reflects a practical response to urban challenges. From the perspective of pragmatist philosophy, this is not
merely a habit but a form of adaptive intelligence. It illustrates how women apply everyday knowledge to
navigate environmental and social pressures. Drawing on the distinction between pragmatism as
“utilitarianism” and as “practical philosophy” in Vietnam, this paper argues that the “Ninja Lead” is a symbol of
modern Vietnamese women's resilience, agency, and pragmatic adaptation in 21st‑century life.
