Abstract

This paper investigates the language of Judgement and Appreciation in economic comments, using “Edible Economics” by Ha-Joon Chang [1] as the data source. The study has applied Appraisal Theory by Martin and White [2] to analyze the semantic features of Judgement and Appreciation. Analytical methods using qualitative and quantitative data are used to analyze samples containing Judgment and Appreciation. The findings reveal that, the author employs a variety of linguistic means to express Judgement and Appreciation, with a tendency towards expressing positive meanings. This study contributes to understanding how language of evaluation is used to shape viewpoints and create discursive effects in economic discourse.
