Abstract

This article presents a solution to mitigate the switching overvoltage for the 220 kV overhead line and substation. This article presents the results of the EMTP simulation of the switching overvoltage phenomenon on the substation and the 220 kV overhead line connecting from Ban Ve hydroelectric plant through Do Luong substation to Hung Dong substation. The main causes leading to switching overvoltage due to switching on the 220 kV overhead line without loads, closing capacitors and closing on transformers are investigated and simulated to evaluate these effects on the operation of the power system. In instances where serious switching overvoltage occurs, the author suggests solutions for mitigation. These solutions are verified through simulation using EMTP software. The simulated results presented clearly show that, the proposed solution can reduce the peak values of switching overvoltages with reasonable accuracy.
