Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-switching within Vietnamese secondary English
Language Teaching (ELT) contexts. The findings indicate that code-switching positively influences student
comprehension, contributes to reduced anxiety, and cultivates a comfortable learning environment.
However, the study also identifies potential drawbacks associated with an over-reliance on the first
language (L1), including the dilution of Vietnamese, impeded English immersion, and a slower pace
of language acquisition. The study concludes that while code-switching is an integral aspect of these
classrooms, a balanced and strategic approach by educators is critical to optimizing its benefits while
effectively mitigating its disadvantages
