Research on the effectiveness of pre-questioning in improving the academic reading comprehension skills of university students

Abstract

Reading is the most common and compulsory activity that students have to do all the time and to comprehend English academic texts is one aspect which is most required by EFL students. However, there are some issues related to the reading comprehension ability and skills of university students, starting from the vocabulary insufficiency, problems in understanding linguistics complexities to the lack of background knowledge and proper reading strategies. To overcome these issues, pre-questioning is suggested in order to increase students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of pre-questioning in improving students’ achievement in reading and to give some suggestions regarding pre-questioning that teachers could apply in their classroom.
