Abstract

This study is carried out to analyze meanings of phrasal verbs with particle ‘up’ and ‘out’ and investigate meaning transference of the phrasal verbs’ constituents. Phrasal verbs (PVs) with up and out have been chosen for the fact that they are highly frequent in Business English. Basing on image schema meanings of the particles, possible senses of PVs have been identified and classified. The Path and Container metaphors used in the study can be found in general uses of English, which supports the idea that the model presented can be extended to other fields in English.
