Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates the challenges non-specialist learners face in using Chinese idioms, focusing on those preparing for the HSK5 exam. Employing surveys, classroom observations, and second language acquisition theories, it identifies common errors and proposes improvements. Findings reveal that misunderstandings and incorrect usage stem from a lack of cultural context knowledge. The study suggests new teaching approaches emphasizing interaction, practice, and cultural understanding, aiming to help learners use idioms accurately and flexibly. This enhances communication skills and cultural awareness of China.
