Abstract

Metacognitive strategy is one of the learning strategies that includes planning, monitoring and evaluation. This study wants to learn about the attitudes and ways English majors apply metacognitive strategies when writing academic essays. Online questions based on the Likert scale were sent to 68 English majors at Dong Nai University of Technology. Of these, eight students agreed to be interviewed to verify information from the questionnaire. The results showed that the majority of students found the usefulness of applying metacognitive strategies in the academic writing process. However, there are still some students who have difficulty implementing these strategies. This article recommends that instructors guide students to apply metacognitive strategies in writing classes because it helps learners write more critically and fluently in English.
