This article investigates first-year FL1 students’ perceptions of the deductive approach to
teaching grammar at HUST. Through surveys, observations, and interviews, it highlights the approach’s
benefits of clarity and efficiency but reveals challenges of disengagement, limited retention, and difficulty
applying rules, suggesting integrating interactive strategies for improvement.
