Abstract

From the late 19th to early 20th centuries, the decorative arts in Hanoi’s Catholic churches clearly showcased a cultural integration between Western and Vietnamese influences during the French colonial period. Western architectural styles like Gothic and Roman were introduced, but they weren’t strictly replicated. Instead, Vietnamese artisans localized these styles, skillfully blending traditional techniques such as wood carving, gilded lacquer, and folk motifs into the designs. This unique fusion created sacred spaces that not only served their religious purpose but also reflected the creativity and local cultural identity. Studying this process of cultural exchange and adaptation offers deeper insights into the artistic identity of Hanoi’s Catholic churches and helps guide the conservation and promotion of cultural values in the present day.
