Review on the application of recycled aggregates and recycled aggregates concrete in construction

Abstract

Using recycled aggregate from construction and demolition waste can conserve natural aggregate resources, reduce the need for landfills and contribute to a sustainable built environment. This study provides a comprehensive overview of recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in terms of: properties of materials (physical, chemical, and mechanical properties), construction application. In addition, methods to improve the mechanical properties of RAC are also mentioned, including: reducing the porosity of recycled aggregates, the quantity of old mortar layer on recycled aggregates and improving properties without adjusting recycled aggregates (i.e. concrete mixing methods and reinforcement addition). Furthermore, some state-of-the-art RAC applications, the limitations and challenges of the RAC application are also considered. Finally, future research prospects and applications of RAC in Vietnam and around the world
are discussed.
