Abstract

The polycentric urban structure began to emerge in the 1980s after the proliferation of CBD (center business districts) outside the core CBD. Although it is now widely recognized that contemporary urban systems have complex and multi-node structures, research into the exact nature of this structure is still inconclusive. Some view it as an organized system of sub-centers, others see it as an unorganized city. In other words, some views it as a multi-centre city, others see it as a decentralized city.

In Vietnam, recently, many urban planning projects have launched planning projects with multi-center structure. However, theoretically, the studies on urban structure in Vietnam are really very few as well as there are no studies evaluating the operation of planned cities with multi-center structure in practice. to make adjustments in planning work. This leads to the formation of a new center that still maintains the will, which is not right according to the development needs of the city, has not yet created the attraction to reduce the excessive development load of the core city, increase the travel distance or changing the direction of urban activities, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to have theories to determine the relationship of new centers with the core city as a basis for planning to avoid undesirable consequences for development. expansion of grade I cities.
