Abstract

Irrigation works were one of the government's main concerns throughout the French colonial period (1858–1945), as they directly served the war of aggression and economic exploitation of colonial agricultural. Studying the history of irrigation during this time period would reveal a lot about the modern history of Vietnam in general and the irrigation business in particular. This paper begins by providing an overview of irrigation research during the French colonial period in order to provide more information on the formation and development of the irrigation system, the French colonial government's irrigation development policy for economic, political, and military purposes, exploitation management, and the effects of irrigation work on the Vietnamese economy and society in modern times. This literature review appears to be a stand alone study, but it can also be utilized as part of a research history to assist uncover new research.
