Abstract

In the context of modern education shifting toward the development of students’ comprehensive competencies, aesthetic competence plays a vital role in shaping personality, nurturing creative thinking, and evoking artistic emotions. With its concise and imagery-rich language, poetry serves as an ideal medium for aesthetic education in lower secondary Literature classes. This article analyzes the role of poetry in fostering aesthetic competence among secondary school students and proposes competency-based instructional methods for teaching poetry, aligned with the 2018 General Education Curriculum and the “Creative Horizons” textbook series. The study is grounded in theoretical foundations and practical findings from field research at the Vietnam-Finland International School, thereby affirming the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating aesthetic education into poetry instruction.
