URBANIZATION IN HO CHI MINH CITY – BINH DUONG – DONG NAI REGION: CURRENT TRENDS AND CHALLENGES

Abstract

Urbanization trends in Ho Chi Minh – Binh Duong – Dong Nai region is happening fast with the formation of Di An, Thuan An and Thu Duc city. This process makes the region become a new economic center of the Southeast Vietnam. However, the rapid growth also brings consequences and challenges for the region. This article has the objective of understanding the challenges of urbanization in this region. The results of the article show the following problems and challenges: Employment for workers in the traditional and informal sectors; security issues – social safety; rush hour traffic jams and road quality; conservation of green space; inundation and drainage infrastructure. These problems appear on a regional level, not in a specific locality, so cooperation between regional governments is required to solve the above problems.
