Determination of hookworm infection rate and types of hookworm infection in Mai Trung commune, Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province in 2021

Abstract

Hookworms are known to be one of the causes of prolonged blood loss, with smoldering and unclear symptoms, which is especially dangerous for children and women of reproductive age but these have not been paid enough attention. The study was conducted with the participation of 240 people in Mai Trung commune, Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province and determined the overall worm infection rate was 17.1%, the hookworm infection rate in the study participants was low with 2.9%. The average intensity of worm infestation was 72 eggs/gram of feces, the lowest was 48 eggs/gram of feces, the highest was 120 eggs/gram of feces. Cases of hookworm infections were mild. 100% of participants infected with hookworms were farmers and did not take deworming drugs within the past 3 months. The rate of hookworm infection detected by PCR and body-based testing was 2.9% and 1.2%, respectively. The sensitivity of the PCR method is 2.42 times higher than that of body-based testing.
