Abstract

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is the most common cause of progressive liver disease and one of the leading causes of liver transplantation worldwide. Harmful alcohol consumption is a risk factor for liver injury and ALD. Factors that increase the risk of ALD include female gender, amount and duration of alcohol consumption, genetic variants, smoking, obesity, type 2 diabetes, history of gastric bypass surgery, hepatitis B and C. Treatment of ALD requires multidisciplinary collaboration. Patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis and MELD scores of 25 to 39 benefit from corticosteroids. N-acetylcysteine can be given intravenously as an adjunct to corticosteroids. Patients with severe liver failure should be considered for early liver transplantation.
